Historic coming together of rare living legends
DURBAN will see the reunion of two South Africa music legends when Shunna Pillay and Hugh Masekela play their “Re-uNite at the Royal” concert at the Royal Durban Golf Club on March 24 and 25.
Pillay, who with Masekela and Miriam Makeba were stars of the great African Jazz & Variety Show, met when they were teenagers and maintained strong relationships during their period in exile in the United States and England.
During this time, they performed in some of the best venues in the world including Village Vanguard, The Left Bank, Blue Angel, Mr Callies, Jack Isors and La Condor. The duo is expected to perform favourites including “The Girl that Got Away”, “Ne Me Quitte Pas”, “April in Paris” and “If you go Away”. They will be accompanied by virtuoso jazz pianist Burton Naidoo. Royal Durban Golf Club captain, Gator Reddy said that Pillay and Masekela were “rare living South African icons” and they expected sell-out shows.
We are very fortunate to have secured both Hugh and Shunna and they have been kind enough to donate profits to development golfers at the club. This concert is also very special because it records this historic reunion. We therefore urge ticket buyers to contact us and book early to avoid disappointment. We’re going to have 2 fantastic nights,” he said.
Pillay and Masekela issued a joint statement saying that playing in Durban would bring back great memories. “When African Jazz & Variety came to Durban in the 50s, we literally only played to sell-out audiences.” “City Hall would be filled to the rafters – and we would put on a great show.” “It is therefore a privilege for us to relive some of those moments at this concert.” “Expect something very special,” they said.
The shows start at 19h00 and only 140 tickets are available per night.
Bookings must be made by contacting Zane at Royal Durban on 031 309 1373.
